The Growing Epidemic

Did you know?

·        Diabetes was declared by the United Nations as a worldwide epidemic threatening the entire population.

·        There are over 240 million diabetic patients worldwide.  This number is expected to double within the next 30 years.

·        In Israel (2005), there are over 500,000 diabetic patients which is approximately 8.5% of the total population.  This number is expected to double within the next 30 years.

·        Diabetes is the leading cause for dialysis, blindness, limb amputation, nerve damage, heart and brain diseases.

·        Global health systems spend between 2.5%- 15% of its health budget on diabetes and its related complications. 

·        Diabetes – a disease with no cure.  Cutting edge research and correct treatment can prevent diabetes and its complications.

Why has a cure for Diabetes not been found?

1.    Disregard for the severity of Diabetes

2.    Failing to pool the resources available between research institituions

3.    Individual research-lack of cooperation between research institutions.

4.    Basic research not related to clinical needs.
