Beta Cell

Insulin is produced by beta cells which are organized within the pancreas in cell clusters, called islets.

Both major forms of diabetes (type 1 and type 2) involve inadequate insulin production: this may result from insufficient beta cell number, insufficient beta cell function or both.

Since transplantation of islets into diabetic patients or animals can effectively reverse the diabetes, beta cell replacement therapy or transplantation of insulin-producing cells is now considered to be a very promising approach towards a cure for diabetes.
