WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Diabetes makes a person about three times as likely to develop tuberculosis, and it may be to blame for more than 10 percent of TB cases in India and China, researchers said on Monday.
To clarify the link between the diseases, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston examined data on 1.7 million people from 13 studies done in Canada, Mexico, the United States, Britain, Russia, Taiwan, India and South Korea. for more
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Losing weight through diet and exercise lowers diabetes risk in men and women, but men may have to work harder for the same benefit, new research suggests.
In a study of more than 1,100 adults at risk of type 2 diabetes, researchers found that those who went on an "intensive" regimen of calorie-cutting and exercise lowered their risk of developing diabetes over the next year.
However, despite the fact that men lost more weight and exercised more than women did, that did not translate into a greater reduction in diabetes risk, the researchers report in the journal Diabetes Care. more

A case-cohort evaluation of data from the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Postdam Study was conducted to prospectively determine the relationship between plasma gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and alanine transaminase (ALT) levels and incident diabetes. Analysis of data from 787 patients with incident diabetes and 2,224 subjects with no diabetes found a significant association between incident diabetes and high plasma levels of GGT and ALT, even at concentrations still considered within the normal range of values. The adjusted hazard ratios for incident diabetes were highest in patients in the highest quintiles of GGT and ALT levels. The magnitude of the associations was higher in men than in women for GGT, and showed no significant gender differences for ALT (Ford, E.S. et al. Diabetes Care 2008, 31(6): 1138).

Japanese scientists are reporting a discovery that could affect the use of transplants of insulin-making cells for the treatment of diabetes. The researchers note in ACS' Bioconjugate Chemistry journal that transplantation of the pancreas' insulin-producing cells is a promising experimental strategy for treating patients with type 1 diabetes, but the procedure is not effective enough for many people. The body eliminates a large number of the islet cells immediately following transplantation in an inflammatory reaction initiated by blood clotting on the cells' surface, they explain. In an effort to counter the issue, the scientists covered islet cells with a special polymer film filled with either heparin or urokinase. In lab studies, the coatings stopped the clotting long enough to ward off the destruction that usually happen right after transplantation. The coatings did not impact the ability of the cells to manufacture insulin, according to the study.(http://www.sciencecentric.com/news/article.php?q=08070723) Science Centric (07/07/2008)

Using a large amount of becaplermin (Regranex), which is prescribed for the treatment of severe foot and leg ulcers in people with diabetes, could increase the risk of dying from cancer, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA's warning was issued following a long-term analysis of patients who used the Johnson & Johnson treatment compared with those who did not. A black-box warning has been added to the drug's label, stating that patients who used three or more tubes of becaplermin over a period of 20 months were five times more likely to die from cancer. The FDA's analysis revealed that when patients used lower amounts of the drug, they were at no greater risk of developing cancer than patients who had not used the drug at all.News summaries © 2008 Information, Inc. A new study reveals that hearing loss is about two times as common in adults with diabetes compared to those who do not have the disease. The study was published early online June 17, 2008, in the Annals of Internal Medicine, and was conducted by researchers from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, components of the National Institutes of Health, and Social & Scientific Systems, Inc. The researchers assessed data from hearing tests administered from 1999 to 2004 to participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The test measured participants' ability to hear low-, middle-, and high-frequency sounds in both ears. The researchers found a link between diabetes and hearing loss across all frequencies, with a stronger association in the high frequency range. For high-frequency sounds, mild or greater hearing impairment in the worse ear was 54 percent in those with diabetes compared to 32 percent in those who did not have the disease. Mild or greater hearing impairment of low- or mid-frequency sounds in the worse ear was about 21 percent in 399 adults with diabetes compared to about 9 percent in 4,741 adults without diabetes. The study also revealed that adults with pre-diabetes had a 30 percent higher rate of hearing loss compared to those with normal blood sugar tested after an overnight fast.News summaries © 2008 Information, Inc. Intake of Vegetables, Legumes, and Fruit, and Risk for All-Cause, Cardiovascular, and Cancer Mortality in a European Diabetic Population
A cohort of 10,449 participants with self-reported diabetes within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study was followed for a mean of 9 y. Intakes of vegetables, legumes, and fruit were assessed at baseline between 1992 and 2000. (for more)
