Genetic and epidemiologic studies all ask the same basic question: What are the factors, inherited and environmental, that predispose to diabetes or its complications?
The ultimate goal is to use this information to identify people at risk and to design interventions to prevent the disease.
Any program aiming to prevent diabetes or its complications, or aiming to develop novel treatment modalities, must include genetic and epidemiologic studies that identify likely treatment targets.
